Nubian (Nubi) Duncan is as authentic and knowledgeable to the Mt. Washington Valley and Maine real estate as they get. Commitment to making things right shines through in much more than just his sales. Throughout his 33 years as a real estate broker, Nubi has seamlessly combined his expansive residential real estate knowledge with a passion for harboring lifelong relationships to create the perfect balance for his clients. Take one look at Nubi's smiling family, clients or friendships with colleagues and it is immediately clear just how much love and care he genuinely puts into each of his relationships.

At work with Nubi

How did you land in a real estate career?
My first job in the valley was working for the Radio Station WMWV. One of my many hats was news reporting and covering the planning board meetings. I got exposed to Realtors and Developers that were coming in for application on exciting projects. Coincidentally, David Cianciolo of Country Squire Real Estate (back then) came in for an interview for the mud bowl. After the interview I said to him "what do you think about me getting into Real Estate?" He said "Come in and talk to me tomorrow. That led to working as a Realtor at Country Squire. In the late 80s the two companies' merged and that's how we all ended up at Badger Realty.

What were you doing previous to real estate?
Reporting for the Radio Station, working at the League of NH with Sally Shipoletti, working the front desk at the Cranmore Tennis Club with Howard Hatch. I even covered the Volvo Tournament for the radio station.

What is your favorite part of working in real estate?
The Clients, my fellow agents, the staff as well as working with the other valley real estate agents. It's a great job and I enjoy every day. I am still learning new things every day.

What is one thing you literally could not do your job without?
Our support staff.

What is the best advice you've ever been given?
Treat people the way you'd like to be treated.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to a new real estate agent?
Run away!!! (Laugh) It's a great business. I would encourage them to have 6 months of savings to live on and be patient. Be diligent with follow-up and eventually you'll build a great business. It takes time. Also become a compulsive saver. Bill Crowley taught me that avoiding the emotional highs and low helps keep your sanity. Have an even keel.

What was one of your most defining moments?
That's an easy one, parenthood. I can't think of anything that gives more meaning to me than being a parent.

Who in the industry has made the most impact on your professional journey?
It's got to be Dick Badger. I've learned a lot from him over the years. I like the way he conducts himself, treats everyone with kindness and doesn't micro manage so people can do their jobs. He supports people without being overbearing. I really appreciate his approach and sense of humor.

At Home with Nubi

What neighborhood do you live in?
West Brownfield, Maine

What do you love most about your neighborhood?
It's a quiet residential area with hiking trails right out the door and a stream on the property. I have a nice garden and plenty of room for the chickens. (laugh)

What is your favorite local restaurant?
I hardly ever go out to eat but I do like The Oxford House.

Describe your own first home.
It was a fixer upper in Eaton. If it had been in good shape, we wouldn't have been able to afford it. We lived on the screen porch while we worked on the inside. We called it the Wee House. It was SMALL.

What is the first big-ticket item you bought when you moved into your first home?
A couch.

At Play with Nubi

You have a full day free in your town with no obligations and cost is no object. What do you do?
Go downhill skiing in the winter and water skiing in the summer. The next best thing to flying!

How do you start each day?
Core strength exercises followed by any PT exercises to work thru my current injuries are at the moment. Tea or coffee then take care of the chickens, dubbing around with chores then off to work. In the summer, I love to get in some waterskiing.

What do you read every single day?
Conway Daily Sun

What is your proudest achievement to date? Personal or professional.
Being a Parent. I'm happy to see that Tyler has had a successful career as a pro freestyle skier and coach, and now has a good job with Jackson Ski Touring.

If you won the lottery what kind of property would you buy?
I'd love to have a big New England farm with fields, a river and wooded mountainous terrain.

What are 4 words clients would use to describe you?
Personable • Thorough • Conscientious • Kind

Words your family would use to describe you?
Pain in the Butt • Hopefully a good dad • Hard worker that does whatever needs to be done when it needs to be done.

What did you eat for breakfast today?
A toast everything bagel with butter, cheddar and bacon.

If you could have one super power, what would it be?
Very interesting… the ability to see the future.

If you could become the number one expert in one niche field, what would it be?
I've always been intrigued with efficiency. I like to think of the best ways to do something that are the simplest and most cost effective by using existing resources that are available and using them as efficiently as possible whether its drainage, building a house, moving firewood, or a real estate transaction. An Efficiency Expert with a sense of humor.
